Longing for Deserts

Location: Death Valley & its surrounding areas, CA, U.S.

Since my teens, I‘ve longed for a certain scenery. In the spring of 2020, I had the opportunity to visit it. The shifting flow of sand grains, constantly changing in the moment, and the hard rock formations that seemed as if they would endure until the end of time. A place devoid of all excess, exuding a coldness that seemed to reject humanity, yet embracing everything with its soft, flowing curves. This land of my dreams was a place where only air, sand, and rock extended endlessly, coexisting with everything in this world. For printing the photographs, I chose washi paper. With its graceful yet assertive strength, I felt that washi was the perfect medium to express the contrasting impressions I had of this place. The unevenness inherent to this natural material, along with its ability to change the appearance of the printed image depending on the intensity and direction of the light source and the angle from which it is viewed, made it well-suited to convey the ever-changing sand dunes and desolate desert landscape. This allowed me to recreate and share with viewers the sensations I experienced at the time of shooting. In Saint-Exupery’s “The Little Prince”, the prince said, ”What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.” I wonder if I was able to find my well. Even four years after the shoot, I continue my journey in search of wells.
