Sketches from My Car Window
Location: CA, U.S.
In February 2020, I traveled through the southwestern United States by rental car. During the journey, I witnessed a blend of the magnificent American landscape and scenes of human activity connected by asphalt roads and high-voltage power lines from the car window. I continued taking photos from inside the moving car. I felt as if the colors, sounds, humidity and scents of each scene permeated my mind with every press of the shutter. Simultaneously, they reminded me of the American entertainment culture that fascinated me when I was a teenager. The act of taking photos itself sharpened my senses, transforming the passing scenery into something I actively wanted to capture. Fueled by this newfound feeling, I just kept on taking photos. Now, several years after my trip, the excitement of those days has faded. However, the passage of time was worthwhile in order to find the essence of the sensation I wanted to preserve in my photograph and to explore the roots of my preferrences. In my studio, I slowly reconstructed the moments that I had captured in tenths or hundredths of a second, as if I were sketching them on drawing paper. In the process, color became unnecessary and the work was expressed in monochrome.
